Ca’Rugate
Winery
Ca’ Rugate established by the Tessari family in 1986, takes its name from the volcanic hills where most of the vineyards are to be found. The ca’ Rugate vineyards cover 40 hectares, 30 of which are located within the commune of Monteforte d’Alpone in the rugged heart of Soave Classico; and 10 hectares in the commune of Montecchia di Crosara in nearby Valpolicella.
For many generations, these gentle sloping hills have been a cradle for high quality wines; due to the unique sunny microclimate and rich volcanic soil. Ca’ Rugate uses only indigenous grape varieties such as Garganega, and Trebbiano di Soave for white wines; and Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone for reds. In the vineyard, they use modern pruning techniques, along with careful canopy management and green pruning; while the latest vinification techniques bring out distinctive aromas and refined flavours in the wines. With all this natural potential from the vineyards, three generations of the Tessari family have combined their respect for the soil and tradition, with a passion for winemaking. At ca’ Rugate, the winemaking philosophy is to remain true to the varietal character of the grapes.

Ca’ Rugate Amarone 2008
Intense garnet red in color. Concentrated aromas of ripe blueberries, blackberries and cherries are enhanced with a hint of spicy oak. The palate is rich, full bodied and complex; beautifully balanced and lingering.
The 2008 Amarone della Valpolicella shows good up-front richness and depth. There is plenty of focus, but this is a pretty subdued style of Amarone. Sweet red cherries, flowers, mint and spices inform the crystalline, vibrant finish. There is a lot to like, even if at times the wine is not especially Amarone-like. The firm tannins could use at least another year of bottle age to soften. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.

Ca’ Rugate La Perlara Recioto di Soave 2008
Bright golden in color. Intensely perfumed with floral notes and hints of sultanas, dried figs, nuts and spices. Richly sweet and lingering in the mouth. At its best after at least one year in bottle.
Delicious and super-intense in the most beautiful way, this golden Recioto di Soave imparts aromas of honey, yellow rose, dried apricot and candied orange skin. It’s sweet and thick but not in a heavy or cloying way. Lovely.

The 2008 Recioto di Soave La Perlara is a gorgeous wine redolent of tangerine peel, dried flowers, mint, roses and burnt sugar. Clean layers of minerality support the fruit through to the focused, long finish. This is a totally engaging wine from Ca’ Rugate. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018.

Ca’ Rugate L’Eremita Recioto Della Valpolicella 2008
Dark intense ruby red in color. On the nose it shows black fruit and berry notes, with hints of wild herbs and spice. The plate is sweet, luscious and rounded balanced by velvety tannins.
2008 Ca’Rugate Recioto della Valpolicella l’Eremita
The 2008 Recioto della Valpolicella L’Eremita reveals excellent depth and harmony in its black cherries, espresso, mocha, spices and flowers. This is a relatively delicate style of Recioto that impresses for its balance more than its size or power. My impression is that it is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.
