Fanti

Winery

The area of vineyards has been developed in the amphitheatre of the south facing hills of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, at 350-430m asl, a part of which are to be found quite near the wonderful Roman Basilica of Sant’Antimo, and the rest in the hill side slopes from Castelnuovo dell’Abate toward Orcia. The soil is limy with stratified formation of “galestro” (marls). The climate is extremely particular and at one and the same time favours robust and elegant wines because of the strong exposure to the sun during the day thanks to the configuration of the hills where the vineyards are located, with a good thermal drop at night due to the fresh winds coming from nearby Mount Amiata.

Rosso di Montalcino 2007

100% Sangiovese aged 12 months in a beguiling combination of new and 2nd-passage French-oak barriques and large French-oak barrels.

Fanti’s 2007 Rosso di Montalcino is a fresh, vinous offering with attractive red fruit well-suited to near-term enjoyment. This is a relatively medium-bodied, accessible style for the Rosso, with less of the plumpness that is found in vintages such as 2006. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012.
88 points, Wine Advocate

Light and cheerful, this ruby-colored Rosso delivers a mixed bag of aromas. You’ll detect red fruit, barbecue spice, smoked meat, leather and prune. It shows very nice intensity and persistency on the close with a playful touch of refreshing acidity. – M.L.

Brunello di Montalcino 2005

100% Sangiovese aged 12 months in French-oak barriques followed by another 12 months in large oak barrels.

Shows dried flowers and mushroom, with plenty of ripe fruit. Full-bodied, with soft, silky tannins. Reserved and very pretty already. Layered and classy for the vintage…

An important and historic player in Montalcino, Fanti comes forth this year with yet another beautiful Brunello. The wine is elegant and harmonious with bright layers of cherry fruit, spice and cola. The feeling it imparts in the mouth is one of richness and smoothness and there’s a playful touch of sour cherry on the close.

Brunello di Montalcino 2006

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino marks a significant change of direction from past vintages. The dark, heavy style has been replaced by a much more finessed, elegant expression of fruit. Sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, mint and licorice are woven together beautifully in this silky, multi-dimensional, graceful Brunello. Sweet notes from the oak are intermingled with floral overtones on the silky finish. The 2006 is the most interesting wine I have tasted from Fanti in quite a few years. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

Gorgeous on all fronts save for a tiny touch of rawness on the nose. Aromas include fresh cedar wood, incense and crème de cassis syrup. The wine is determined and powerful in terms of alcohol and delivers long, rich intensity to match. Imported by Sherbrooke Cellars

Plenty of plum jam aromas and flavors with lots of citrus fruit and chocolate character. Full body, soft and fresh. I like the juicy finish. Best to drink after 2014

A dose of new oak lends vanilla and clove aromas and flavors, along with cherry and blackberry. There’s a brightness to this red and the tannins are well-integrated, despite being firm and dense. Fine length. Best from 2013 through 2025.—B.S.

Brunello di Montalcino 2007

Deep ruby red, tending to garnet with bright orange nuances. Complex with an intense smell of ripe fruit, among which stands out the cherry, wild berries, tobacco and rhubarb. A smell of sweets spices and vanilla complete the olfactory profile. A soft and enveloping entrance with a fresh and persistent ending. A long aftertaste with an excellent taste-olfactory correspondence

“This fine and delicate Brunello shows soft elegance and sophistication in the form of cassis, wild berry, white pepper, root beer, toasted nut and smoky cigar tobacco. The mouthfeel is firm, clean and tonic with elements of tannic structure and fresh acidity that work well together. The oak element is still young and needs time to integrate.”

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino wafts from the glass with sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, spices and licorice. Ripe, silky tannins frame the long, polished finish. This is an especially refined, gracious Brunello from Fanti. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.
