Winery

Mario Lucchetti began in the 1980s with the first acres of Lacrima di Morro d’Alba, one of the local indigenous varietals in this rural area of Le Marche in the province of Ancona, not far from the town of Jesi. His passion focused on restoring the importance of the area’s native varietals. With new plantings in 2004, the estate’s total vineyard size expanded to 14 hectares and continues to grow today. In recent years, Mario’s son Paolo completed his degree in enology and is now working side by side with his father to carry the family tradition into the next decades. The focal point of the winery is their basic Lacrima bottling, but they also produce the “Guardengo” single-vineyard bottling as well as an Amarone style Lacrima made from partially dried grapes. Annual production remains well under 10,000 cases per year.
Lacrima di Morro d’Alba is an indigenous dark purple grape that exemplifies the Marche wine region. Historic records document that the grape has been harvested in the narrow region that today comprises the heart of Morro d’Alba since medieval times. On average, the grapes are harvested in the first ten days of September and vinified using the traditional method to make a very pleasant, ready-to-drink wine with the unmistakable bouquet of violets and wild strawberries. Fruity yet exotic and concentrated, this wine is delightful paired with traditional salami and Italian coldcuts, roasted meats and grilled sausages and is perfect for spring and fall, when the weather calls for less structured wines.

Lacrima di Morro d’Alba 2008

Deep violet in color, the wine explodes out of the glass with an extremely intense and heady bouquet of exotic Eastern flowers and wild strawberries and pomegranate. Once past the intriguing nose, the palate features wild berry compote, hints of roses, violets and geranium, a note of pink peppercorn and finishes very fresh with limited tannins. An utterly unique experience featuring outstanding balance and concentration.

“The 2008 Lacrima di Morro d’Alba is one of the more exotic, quirky reds from Southern Italy readers are likely to come across. The aromatic and flavor profile is intensely medicinal/herbal (but not at all unpleasant), much like that of Piedmont’s Brachetto. There is more than enough depth to the dark, plummy fruit to provide balance. This is a beautiful, caressing wine that I hope will get the attention it deserves. The length and harmony are first-class. It should pair beautifully with prosciutto, salami and other cured meats. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013.”

Lacrima di Morro d’Alba Mariasole 2007

“The 2007 Lacrima di Morro d’Alba Mariasole is one the more fascinating wines I tasted from the Marche this year. Made partially from dried grapes, the Mariasole impresses for its superb pedigree and class. Blackberry jam, cassis, grilled herbs, sage, mint and spices are all woven together in an intricate fabric that leads to a soft, opulent finish. Chocolate, espresso and juniper berries add the final touches on the exotic yet captivating close. This is a surprisingly well-balanced, mid-weight wine that hides its 16.5% alcohol very well. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. ”

“The 2008 Lacrima di Morro d’Alba Superiore Guardengo reveals more concentration, richness and vibrancy than the regular bottling, with intense varietal notes of blackberries, spices, sweet herbs and juniper berries, all of which come together with unusual grace. A long, caressing finish rounds out the wine in style. This is an outstanding effort from Lucchetti. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2015. ”
