Nals Margreid

Winery
The new cellar under construction seems to have not distracted the very young kellermeister Harald Schraffl. The Cantina Nals Margreid has by now established itself among the Olympus of Alto Adige winemaking. Wines, above all whites, ever more representative of the territory, ever more stylistically defined and technically impeccable, are the result of severe selection in the vineyards. The Pinot Bianco Sirmian, the Sauvignon Mantele and the Pinot Grigio Punggl are the pearls of the whites, which are flanked by the reds of the Baron Salvadori line and the Schiava Galea, must-haves for the appellation.” Gambero Rosso Guida Vini d’Italia 2011.
Nals Margreid is a cooperative of about 100 small growers located in the Alto Adige region of Northern Italy. The cooperative was formed in 1985 by the merging of The Cellars Nalles (established in 1932) and Magre-Niclara (established in 1954) – two well-respected entities, both steeped in tradition. While cooperatives are typical in the Alto Adige (where parcels are often small and at high altitudes in mountainous terrain) their goal in joining forces was to unite some of the best wine growers from the Strada del Vino (wine road) of Alto Adige into something of a “dream team”. Today, 140 growers cultivate a wide range of local varieties in over150 hectares of vineyards for the Nals Margreid Cellar.
The vineyards of Nals Margreid are positioned between 200 and 900 meters above sea level, stretching from Nalles in the north to Magrè in the south. These locations benefit from both the climactic-barrier protection of the Alps to the North, and the warmth of the Mediterranean influences from the South. Soils are made up of gravel subsoil on the slopes of the mountains, and alluvial soil on the valley floor. Fold in primitive rock such as granite, slate, limestone, gneiss and porphyry and you’ve got ideal conditions for the growing of premium grapes, and ultimately the production of world-class wines.
The growers of Nals Margreid use natural methods wherever possible. Parasites and diseases are avoided through ecological means. Vines are trained using the classic pergola trellis, or by using the more modern, lower-yielding Guyot method.
Winemaker Harald Schraffl oversees the seamless blending of the fruits of a wide variety of vineyards, soils, vines and microclimates in their small winery. Schraffl’s vinification philosophy is dominated by the importance of preserving the characteristics that the soils and grape varieties impart to the wines. In addition to the blends, Nals Margreid bottles a handful of vineyard-designate wines from tiny, yet exceptional parcels. Earnest and genuine, these wines reflect the character and attributes of the various Alto Adige sub-zones. This is the first time Nals Margreid wines have been imported into the US.

Pinot Bianco 2009
This light and lively Pinot Bianco is rich in character and elegance with beautiful honey, grapefruit, and pineapple notes. Crisp, medium-bodied, and dry with medium acidity, this wine is a perfect accompaniment to pork, chicken, and fish. The 2008 vintage received an impressive 92 points from the Wine Spectator, making this wine an all-around outstanding value.
The golden color predicts this wine’s buttery-rich style. It’s juicy, almost honeyed, with orange citrus and fennel scents, the fullness balanced by apple-skin bitterness and tart acidity in the end.

Moscato Giallo Secco 2010
One side of this wine is bright white flowers, the other dark in tone. You could play off the floral spice and acidity with fluke crudo, or the depth of flavor with a rustic country pâtâ.

Muller Thurgau 2010
The Muller Thurgau grape is a crossing of the mighty Riesling grape and the lesser-known, early-ripening Silvaner grape. Here we see the perfect expression of both varieties with the delicious apricot, green apple and peach aromas of Riesling tempered by the sheer refreshment of Silvaner. Medium-bodied with firm stone fruit, pleasant floral notes, and crisp minerality.
A minerally version, with bright lemon curd, dried apricot and clementine notes. Fresh and clean, with a lip-smacking, white pepper-tinged finish. Drink now through 2012. 200 cases imported. –AN

Sauvignon Mantele 2009
The vineyard that produces the fruit for this Sauvignon Blanc is located in the village of Mantele, near Nalles. These superior grapes are grown in one of the oldest Guyot-trained vineyards in all of Alto Adige. Vinified with cultivated yeasts in steel tanks, this wine is full of charm and rich mineral character with an intense bouquet of elderflower and grapefruit essences, the true embodiment of the grace and elegance Alto Adige whites have to offer.
A cooperative of 140 growers, Nals Margreid vinifies this wine in stainless steel from a single vineyard in Mantele, near Nalles. It’s a pure, fruit-driven sauvignon with tropical scents of passionfruit and a pungent acidity that carves out the detail in the flavor. Firm and mineral-rich, this coasts on a long arc of flavor, finishing clean. Chill it for grilled fish with mango salsa.

Sauvignon Mantele Alto Adige 2011
Light yellow. Mineral and herbal accented citrus and melon aromas are complemented by white flowers. Pliant lemon zest and green fig flavors are lifted by gentle minerality, but I would have liked a little more concentration and length for an outstanding score.

Schiava Santa Maddalena 2009
Friuty aromas of cherries, red berries and violet combined with slightly toasted notes.
This schiava is more a rosé than a full-on red wine, with red apple-skin flavors and pretty spice. It’s simple and light; terrific with spicy sausages.

Pinot Grigio Punggl 2009
The Pinot Grigio ‘Punggl’ grows in fertile highly clayey grounds southern Magrè. The aromatic fruity taste is marked by honey, nuts and flowers giving elegance and charm to this wine. Its taste is full on the palate, with notes of minerals and an intense and persistent structure.
Punggl is a very expressive Pinot Grigio (one third of the wine is aged in large oak casks) that imparts fruity tones of peach and melon along with some spicier tones of pastry cream and vanilla. It shows good structure and silkiness in the moth.

Pinot Grigio 2010
Baked apple scents and apple juice flavors gain energy from this wine’s acidity. It leaves a tart impression, needing food to balance. Serve it with chicken-apple sausages.

Pinot Grigio Punggl Alto Aldige 2010
Medium straw-yellow color. Fresh pear, nectarine and spices on the nose, accompanied by tangerine and fresh herbs. Suave and juicy on entry, then minerally, brisk and firm in the middle, with a penetrating quality shown by very few examples of pinot grigio in general. Ripe pear and nectarine flavors show laser-like accuracy thanks to bright acidity, but this wine also has greater depth of creamy fruit than usual. Finishes brisk and long, with palate-saturating flavor.
92, International Wine Cellar, October 2011
Bright and tangy, this white has a creamy mineral base, supporting flavors of tangerine and pear, with a hint of pineapple. Refreshing. Drink now. 112 cases imported. –AN
