Renè Bouvier receives a great score from Wine Spectaor’s Insider:

A bit rigid now, with a core of cherry, raspberry, mineral and earth flavors, all backed by firm tannins. This bodes well for its future, as the lasting impression is one of sweet fruit and intensity. Best from 2014 through 2027.—B.S.

Pierre-Henri Morel, Domaine Gouron, and Viticcio make the cut for Spectators “100 Outstanding Values of 2011″

PIERRE-HENRI MOREL
Côtes du Rhône-Villages Signargues 2009
A pure and very silky wine, with a gorgeous mix of damson plum, raspberry, black cherry and plum fruit, laced with graphite and black tea and followed by a long, incense-tinged finish. Drink now through 2012. 3,500 cases made. –JM…
90 Points, Wine Spectator, Oct 31, 2011

DOMAINE GOURON
Chinon 2009
This is nicely focused, offering a savory herb note to hold together the core of black cherry, damson plum and red currant fruit. Hints of licorice and iron check in on the finish. A very solid red. Drink now through 2013. 8,300 cases made. –JM
90 Points, Wine Spectator, Oct 15, 2011

VITICCIO
Toscana Bere 2009
Boasting dark cherry and berry aromas and flavors, this polished red is vibrant and harmonious. Lingers on the finish, with a tight, fruit- and spice-filled aftertaste. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2013 through 2020. 2,000 cases imported. –BS

“The Tessari family of Ca’Rugate has been producing wine for more than 100 years—they’re regarded as one of the Veneto’s top producers. This 100% Garanega wine may be the Tessaris “basic” offering, but it’s a thoroughly charming and lively wine. – By Lettie Teague of the Wall Street Journal, “Italy’s Soave Makes a Refreshing Return

Fanti’s 2006 Brunello di Montalcino scores 90 Points with International Wine Cellar.
A dose of new oak lends vanilla and clove aromas and flavors, along with cherry and blackberry. There’s a brightness to this red and the tannins are well-integrated, despite being firm and dense. Fine length. Best from 2013 through 2025.—B.S.

July 14, 2011

Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino 2006 scores 94 Points with Wine Spectator.

Licorice, tar, black cherry and plum aromas and flavors highlight this robust, chewy, red. This is concentrated and intense, with all its components in the right proportions for a long evolution. Stiff tannins are matched by sweet fruit on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2027.

2009 Nals Margreid Alto Adige Mantele Sauvignon scores 93 Points with Wine Spectator.

A cooperative of 140 growers, Nals Margreid vinifies this wine in stainless steel from a single vineyard in Mantele, near Nalles. It’s a pure, fruit-driven sauvignon with tropical scents of passionfruit and a pungent acidity that carves out the detail in the flavor. Firm and mineral-rich, this coasts on a long arc of flavor, finishing clean. Chill it for grilled fish with mango salsa.

2006 Fongoli Montefalco Sagrantino scores 90 Points with Wine Spectator.

This rich red needs time to reveal its layers of briary black and red fruit. Licorice and wild herb notes are tightly wrapped in a cloak of ripe tannins. Best from 2013 through 2020. 224 cases imported. –BS

John Mariani of Bloomberg News recently tasted Pasquale Pelissero Dolcetto d’Alba 2008 and Aldo Conterno Langhe Dolcetto Masante 2007:

Pasquale Pelissero Dolcetto d’Alba 2008: “The estate’s Dolcetto d’Alba Cascina Crosa 2008, made in the Langhe region, has a very deep color and rich tannins. Micro-oxygenation enhances the fruit, so obvious in the bouquet. At 13 percent alcohol, this is a lovely, easy-to-drink expression of 21st-century Dolcettos.”

Aldo Conterno Langhe Dolcetto Masante 2007: “A stunning example of how a famous Barolo vintner can produce a Dolcetto of such quality is Aldo Conterno’s Masante 2007 from the Langhe region, where the vineyards were established in 1969. When I tasted the wine last week I was amazed at the depth and complexity that followed the expected deep purple color. It has aged impeccably, its fruit, acids and tannins in perfect harmony, and an extraordinary value at $20 a bottle.”

The Wine Spectator Website has given our Domaine du Chalet Pouilly Pouilly Fuisse 2007 a well-deserved 92 points:

“Shows fine intensity, with the vivid structure driving its stone, lemon and mineral flavors. This is almost too powerful now, but the long, smooth finish reveals both the harmony and the beauty of this white. Best from 2011 through 2022. 2,750 cases made.” –BS

Pico Maccario Monferrato Chiaretto Berro 2009 gets an 88 from Wine Advocate!

“Typical of a wine from a northerly climate, the 2009 Monferrato Chiaretto Berro’ from Maccario emerges from the glass with a high-toned bouquet that leads to a rush of fresh strawberries. Clean, mineral notes balance the finish. This is one of the more unusual rosés readers will come across but the balance is beyond reproach. The Monferrato Chiaretto Berro’ is 85% Barbera and 15% Freisa.”
